Jesus Goes To Church

There is constant speculation surrounding "if Jesus were to show up on a Sunday Morning, what would he say or do" that floats in and out of discussions. The truth is - we have no idea what he would or would not do and to think we know means that our version of who Jesus is and what he would do is superior to everyone else's. We know of two occasions where he came into the house of worship and ended up getting so angry that he demolished the activity in the lobby area. Now my default is that I still love the Church deeply and beleive that it is the hope for a world is trying to figure a way out of this mess we have created. So my question is - what causes us to turn the place where we worship, into something other than it was intended for? Jump in on this one please.

  1. I wonder what Jesus would have said if he had walked into a certain, relatively modest, BIC church found tucked against the provincial countryside of Canada on a nondescript Sunday evening for service. Would he have recognized THAT place as His father's house? Would he have recognized those Brethren, as his brothers and sisters? Would he have stood, cloaked with the same smug holiness found on the faces of those who were expelling a young girl from amongst their midst? Would he too have thought this young girl to be unworthy of his father's grace or a place at his banquet table. What would Jesus Do? A t-shirt slogan or a way of life? What would Jesus have done that night? What would Jesus have said to that young woman When she "turned to the place where [she] worshiped" to find that the love of Christ was something of gospels only. I believe, on that night, Jesus would have raged against the white-washed hypocrisy he found there. He would have reminded this congregation how, by adhering to the "letter of the law" they had failed to convey the "heart" of the law that is God himself. What would Jesus have said to the Pastor of THAT congregation? Woe to those through who evil comes? Perhaps we will never know what Jesus would have said, but I think, by reading His word, we know what He would have done.
